Reforging for Feral Tanks in Cataclysm

Cataclysm introduced a new form of item customization called Reforging.  Through Reforging, a player can take a certain percentage of an items secondary stats, such as Mastery, Haste, or Crit, and trade them for another.  The system is still new, however, so many players are left confused as to which stats should be Reforged out of and into.  For Feral Tanks, read on after the bump to find out how you should Reforge your gear to get the most our of every piece of equipment.

Generally speaking, you will want to Reforge into Dodge rating.  If your Hit rating is terribly low and misses are affecting your ability to tank, you could consider Reforging into some Hit.  Generally speaking, however, additional Dodge will be the best use of your Reforges.

As for which stats to Reforge out of, it depends on the current state of your gear.  If you are over the Hit cap, meaning you could lose some Hit rating and still never miss, you will definitely want to Reforge your excess Hit into Dodge.  You should also be sure to Reforge out of any completely useless stats such as Parry or Block.  Ideally, however, you should just try to replace those pieces as they will still not be great for a Feral Tank even after a Reforge.

Once you can no longer give up Hit while staying above the cap and you run out of useless stats, you should then start Reforging your Haste into Dodge.  Haste's benefit to our threat generation is relatively minimal and its bonus to our survivability is almost negligible, so don't feel bad about trading in as much of it as possible.  You could also consider swapping out some Expertise for Dodge, but never do so unless you are over the soft cap of 195 Expertise.

Have you taken the time to Reforge your gear?  Are you a fan of this new system?  Would you do things differently?  Let me know in the comments.

  1. Thanks for the tips, looking into bear tank and your advice has given me a lot of food for thought.

As feral dps i've been abusing reforging to it's fullest extent taking all haste to hit/crit/mastery, and some crit to hit/expertise as needed in pvp gear alone while still doing 10k dps with ease.

I think it's a wonderful system that really lets you fill in the gaps with your gear.

  2. What do you think about mastery for feral tonks? On my prot warrior, mastery is definitely king, but I can't decide yet how good it is for ferals.

  3. Good info mate, appreciated - always wondered if haste was really worth it - we big heavy bears who hit hard when we hit and should rely more on big dmg blows than haste I take it
