EDIT: Check out the blogs Main Page for brand new Cataclysm Alpha Videos!
Now that the World of Warcraft: Cataclysm Alpha is out, it is only a matter of time before delicious leaks start flooding the WoW web. Those participating in the Alpha are subject to an NDA (Non-Disclosure Agreement), so expect some of the earliest leaks to be vague or well hidden. I am not in the Alpha and therefore not subject to the NDA, so I will gather and post what I can here. So let's get to it!
The folks over at MMO Champion have been freaking out all morning about a supposed leaked screen-shot of the Cataclysm character model for Deathwing. The head of the website has squeezed the image out off their servers and is blasting it out of the forums whenever it rears its head. Thankfully, I managed to lay my hands on a copy of the image which you can view below.
Now, I cannot comment on the legitimacy of the image. It is not my image and I have posted it only for reporting purposes. It could very well be a fake. If so, however, it is a well done fake. Also, if it were a fake, I would assume there would be less panic over at MMO Champion. Supposedly, the head of that website got his hands on a Cataclysm Friends and Family Alpha key and is terrified that this image will jeopardize his participation in the Cataclysm Alpha. Those are all rumors though and I'll leave it to you what you decide to believe. Regardless, enjoy the image.
I would love to hear what you readers think. Is this a legit Cataclysm leak, or just another well perpetrated Warcraft Expansion Alpha hoax?

Wow... Incredible.
ReplyDeleteFor me, it's highly probable that this screenshot is authentic. Why ?
1. The model correspond to what officially transpired about the aspect of DW (through art works form Blizz')
2. It's very detailled and it's a rather good job. Not likely made by a bored fan ^^
3. I can't see anything from the game which could have been used to build this model from. Nothing is even remotely close to that.
I'm not claiming "IT'S NOT A FAKE. PERIOD." and I may be wrong thinking it's authentic.
But I feel like we're facing our next goal in this expansion ^^
(Sorry for my english, I'm french and not -yet ^^- fluent...)
Yeah, I am with you Yorgle. It could very well be a fake. If it were, however, it is a heck of a fake.
ReplyDeleteSome have speculated that it might just be an Onyxia re-texture, which I guess is possible. Regardless, a lot of work went into it. Whose work is the question everyone seems to want answered. :)
He's kind of... small.
ReplyDeleteIf this is legit, I hope he is scaled up a bit, from the concept and lore I imagined him to be a good bit larger.
Its a fake if you zoom in to the top on the left wing there is a character name some one uploaded the picture in it. Yes the beta is out and yet all the servers are down so this is not possible.
ReplyDeleteI think it's legit, look at the tower behind him. It has soot on it and the water is different than what it is in live.
ReplyDeleteWell it looks legit.... very legit and awesome but it is kinda small but he isnt ment to be hugs just bigger then his children and smaller the Alexstraza(dont know if spelling is correct)
ReplyDeleteWell, there is a character name there, but it indicates the character is in a very odd place. But if it is an alpha leak it would make sense for someone's character to be visible since they likely took the screenshot.
ReplyDeleteEither way it's really cool-looking.
Yeah, I noticed the character name as well. My thoughts were, it is either just as Melfina said and that is the nameplate of the screen shot taker or some other toon in a really odd place or it could be that the model was data-mined from the Alpha and generated on something akin to a private server. Hence Deathwing might actually BE the one taking the screen shot if that makes any sense.
ReplyDeleteIf it's Cataclysm, then the character could easily be flying, so not necessarily so odd a location.
ReplyDeleteIt's very real, but was taken on a private server. That's all.
ReplyDeleteLooks like this is NOT from alpha, but someone that got their hands on it. The nameplate indicated that someone changed their player model to the Deathwing model.
ReplyDeleteWhile i have no doubt that it IS Deathwing, thats not where he is on alpha. This person is simply showing off the model.
I think is "legit", most likely someone that got an alfa key, make a private server and play with the models. I use to play on a private server (before I enter the real thing) and summons like that happens all the time.
ReplyDeleteThe picture looks great but Look at the water it is not how they said it would be the graphics are of the old water not the new water look...
ReplyDeleteholy shit take a look at that guy
ReplyDeleteNo shadow from the dragon
ReplyDeleteThe name above the wing is probably because the person who made it did a model swap.
ReplyDeletelots of shadow from the dragon. LOOK!
ReplyDeletehttp://2.bp.blogspot.com/_vyK5GHJv7-o/S-Ab0EFriRI/AAAAAAAAAB0/aSSadBYCEt4/s1600/dw_big.jpg
It's real, just taken on a private server using the alpha game files.
ReplyDeleteThe nameplate is there because the person taking the picture IS Deathwing, they just changed their model.
Also look at the water, definably the new water that is used in the expansion.
pff i thought he was 1/4 of westfall ...damn make it biggah!
ReplyDeleteFor those who think he's kind of small, I beg to differ. http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_NplNkOIgPTE/SXH1AmDZpJI/AAAAAAAABRg/dSLjJZPItWw/s320/Danath_Trollbane.jpg
ReplyDeleteOf course he's supposed to be big but :
1. No reason to be 3x the size of Malygos or Alex. Of course he may have been growing (and gaining some thinkness with the adamantium "placed" on his skin, but still...)
2. If we (ultimately) fight him in his dragon form (very likely), we really don't want to see only his foot even with camera @ max distance. :) (At least I know I don't !)
I managed to get my toon as close as I could this shot see image

But I noticed things right off the bat! The lamp posts are completely new models, the new tower of the castle in the background, along with some tree tops and to me some better bump mapping or spec lighting on the bridge brown cobblestone. Also the water is the new water as mentioned.
I feel its legit, just a model swap as someone had mentioned!
actually Neltharion (deathwing)btw his brothers and sisters (alex maly ysera nozd)he is the biggest dragon now with the demon soul he grow's aprox x8 or x10 thx to that he put some goblins to work creating his new "skin" with black adamantium idk for me a huge fan of deathwing this model suxs he need to be more epic and evil

ReplyDeleteOh ok, I didn't remember the fact he was bigger :) (I read the book like 2 years ago)
ReplyDeleteI just remembered the fact he was getting this "skin" because he was kind of full of lava (doesn't he need to get laid or smtg ? :D).
All that sexy, world shattering bad-assitude doesn't just happen. He works hard for it!
ReplyDeleteI would say absolutely not a fake. Blizzard uses a particular art style on textures. they changed that art style a little bit with WotLK. and this model follows that newer blizzard art style to a T. now as for thinking someone made this with preexisting wow textures, nope, i do hybrid machinima so ive been through almost all wow textures inside and out. nothing like those. Ive been trying to make a deathwing model in 3d max for 6 months and it is a pain in the ass to alter models to look that clean.
ReplyDeleteso, the model itself looks genuine, the textures look genuine. i say 100% real. i must say, i want to get my hands on this model in the worst way
It doesn't looks like a Fake.
ReplyDeleteLook at water, it's the new model.
Looks awesome and legit, would be AWESOME if they made a StormWind instance where you fight him xD and the water is all lava and the buildings burnt down....ect..
ReplyDeleteThat would be really cool to see. I am not sure how they would pull that off though and keep the lore rolling.
ReplyDeleteDon't get me wrong, I don't think Blizzard would be beyond obliterating Stormwind. I just think that might require more phasing than they are willing to stomach.
